Sacraments
"Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Confirmation (or Chrismation), the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life:1 they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian's life of faith. There is thus a certain resemblance between the stages of natural life and the stages of the spiritual life." Catechism of the Catholic Church #1210

History of
Our Lady of Lourdes
In 1850 the first Catholics came to settle in the Schroon Lake area. The Catholic Cemetery started with the burial of Margaret Crowley McCarthy who died May 18, 1863. In 1867 Schroon Lake became a Catholic mission of Olmstedville under the title of “Our Lady of Lourdes” and remained a mission of Olmstedville for fifteen years. The Church was completed in January of 1883. It stood on the roadside of the Catholic cemetery on the Hoffman Road. Father Edward Tetrault was the first resident pastor at Schroon Lake, he was named in 1914. On May 27, 1915, the family of Lemon Garfield sold the property on Main Street, where the church now stands, for $1200.00. The church on Hoffman Road was moved to its present location on Main Street in March of 1917. The Parish house was constructed in 1922 with the Community Center being built in 1927.
The church was renovated in 1963 – 64, enlarging the Parish house and connecting it to the church by a hallway. A Sacristy and a large auditorium-style room were added. In 1964 Bishop Donnellan dedicated the renovated church. In 1998 the church was painted and redecorated. A new stain glass window honoring Mary was installed over the entranceway. Father Richard Sturtz was pastor at that time.
Our Mission has remained the same over the past 175 years. We are committed to bringing about God’s kingdom on earth, deepening our faith, and nurturing the faith of others. Like our predecessors we are proud to continue to share our time, talents and treasures in an effort to strengthen our parish family and bring others to Christ.
