Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Crown Point, NY

We, the people of the Catholic Community of Sacred Heart, find our unity made alive in the word of God. Fed by the Holy Eucharist and strengthened by the sacraments of our church, we remain open to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

In our Christian journey, we strive to build a caring, prayerful and friendly community by living in compassion and service to one another and to all people. Through these efforts, we desire to demonstrate our dynamic faith in the message of Jesus Christ.

Sacraments

"Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Confirmation (or Chrismation), the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life:1 they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian's life of faith. There is thus a certain resemblance between the stages of natural life and the stages of the spiritual life." Catechism of the Catholic Church #1210

History of Sacred Heart

100th Anniversary 1875-1975 of Crown Point, New York Sacred Heart of Jesus Church

Written by Betty G. Clarke

The first recorded Mass said within the limits of the present Diocese of Ogdensburg was celebrated at Crown Point, in 1731.  Its celebrant was Rev. J. Baptiste Lajus, first of the thirteen military Chaplains at Ft. Frederic.  Between 1731 and 1759 there were 31 marriages, 245 baptisms and 198 deaths recorded in the register of the little Chapel at the Fort.

The first Mass said in Crown Point under American rule was celebrated by a Missionary traveling on horseback from one settlement to the next on the shores of Lake Champlain.

The Parish in Crown Point was incorporated on August 8, 1874.  On September 4, 1875, an agreement was signed between the pastor of Ticonderoga, George Jarmine & Thomas Stanton, trustees of Crown Point, and the builders to erect a church in the town.  The church was built for approximately $5,000.00.

Ground was broken for a rectory in July 1955.  The basement area of the rectory was made into classrooms for the purpose of conducting religious instruction classes.  In 1961 the Diocese purchased the Wyman residence to be used as a permanent convent for the Sisters of Atonement.

June 1969 brought more renovation when a new entrance was constructed and a drop ceiling with recessed lighting was installed.

The parish of Sacred Heart seems to have been very poor in money during the first 100 years but very rich in generous friends and benefactors.  Also rich in the fact that the parishioners themselves were very generous with their time and talents anytime they were needed.
